The history of JBS Undert?jet starts in a hayloft not far from Herning. Late in the summer of 1935 16-year-old Jens Bjerg S?rensen had to help out on his father’s farm bringing in the hay. But plagued by asthma, as the young man is, a few minutes in the sweltering 100-degree hayloft clearly shows he is not cut out for life as a farmer. Instead he moves to Herning to match forces with the textile industry. But he has a sprung bed, a seaweed mattress, an eiderdown – and the indomitable will to succeed on his own.
A good idea
After some years the young Jens Bjerg S?rensen is contacted by a man called S?ren Vandris. He shows Jens and three companions how to wind yarn onto so-called cards for a material price of 1 ?re per ball – and then sell the balls of yarn for 25 ?re each. A handsome profit, which despite the problems of procuring yarn during the War puts Jens Bjerg S?rensen in a financial position to start up underpants production on his own. JBS Undert?jet is a reality.
Smart Americans
In 1952, Jens Bjerg S?rensen was introduced to some Americans who knew a great deal about the rationalisation of production. As a result, the company was soon able to reduce its prices by 30 % followed by yet another price reduction. The customers flock in, and they also profit from the fact that JBS is able to supply a large number of sizes, whilst many competitors are still only offering two: small and large.
Let the good times roll…
Many people still remember the JBS name from the happy days of the seventies and eighties with the 6-day cycle race at Herning Halls. And it was precisely this that was one of Jens Bjerg S?rensen’s greatest talents. Not cycling, but establishing the profile of JBS in new and creative ways. Other sports that benefited greatly from the ”underpants king’s” flair for sponsorship and PR were boxing (especially the fights broadcast on TV), football and ice hockey. Today JBS is not so active on those fronts, but nevertheless, there are still Danes who above all associate the brand with the 6-day cycle race.
A memorable slogan
In 1970, for the first time JBS launches a series of underwear which appeals to men and women alike. The series results in the adoption of the slogan, which over the years has become a memorable element of Danish advertising history: JBS – not only for men, but also for naked girls (In Danish, a play on the word "bare", which means both "only" and "naked"). Today all JBS styles are created for men, but the famous slogan will doubtless live on in many people’s memories for many years.
Tradition and innovative thinking
One of JBS’s trade marks has always been a marked feeling for what consumers want – often before they themselves know what they want. Every single collection contains innovative products in the forefront with regard to fabrics, design and comfort. Moreover, a number of our styles have become genuine classics, which continue to appeal to a wide public. For example, did you know that our 300-series under the "Original" product line is completely identical with the very first series Jens Bjerg S?rensen launched on the market in 1939?
A special company culture
Over the years, Jens Bjerg S?rensen showed that he not only had a flair for developing, producing, marketing and selling underwear; he was also able to create a special spirit within the company. A culture which, to this very day, has resulted in JBS Undert?jet’s employees celebrating frequent silver anniversaries with the company.
The story continues
Jens Bjerg S?rensen died in 1987, Denmark’s undisputed underwear king. In 1986, one of his sons, Claus Bjerg S?rensen, had already taken over leadership of the company, and today the third generation is also on its way. He is 31 and is also called … Jens Bjerg S?rensen. Yes, the story goes on.

For instance, who doesn’t remember JBS from the famous 6-day cycle races in Herning throughout the seventies. Or from boxing. Or top football at Ikast.
